KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): The Independent Election Commission (IECinfo-icon) has launched an information bank to help control corruption in the process of candidates’ registration, an official said on Tuesday.

Syed Ibrahim Sadaat, IEC information technology head, told Pajhwok Afghan News that the information registration centre began functioning three days back and had 100 employees.

Provision of exact voter lists, prevention of repeated voter registration and people under the age of 18 have been main duties of the new facility, he said.

He said so far information about over 50,000 voters from 22 provinces of the country had reached the facility and most of them had been registered.

Answering a question regarding multiple registrations by one person through different Tazkeras, he said: “We can find the person who registers multiple times using one Tazkera but if a person with different names and different Tazkeras registers as voter it will be difficult to unearth him, her.”

He said over five million people --- men, womeninfo-icon, Kochis and minorities --- had registered as voters as of yesterday in provincial capitals and district centres.

The IEC has extended the voter registration deadline for one month in provincial capitals following requests from people and members of parliament.
