HEART CITY (Pajhwok): Local healthinfo-icon officials in Badghis and Herat provinces on Wednesday said 13 people have contracted ‘a rare skin disease” after eating a type of vegetable.

Dr. Bashir Ahmad Barakzai, skin specialist in the Herat Zonal Hospital, told a press conference in Herat City, the provincial capital, that the affected individuals were brought to the hospital during the past 15 days.

The patients included eight womeninfo-icon and three children from northern Badghis province and another two persons from Kashk-i-Kuhna and Oba districts of Herat, Dr. Barakzai said.

He said the affected people had said they had eaten a type of vegetable locally known as ‘Shora’ and then the disease appeared on their skin.

“The disease is not communicable and is a type of a serious skin allergy. Some patients need plastic surgery.”

Dr. Barakzai asked people not to eat the specific type of vegetable in order to prevent other people from being affected.

Abdul Hakim, one of the patients, said: “This type of vegetable grows in rain-feed areas. Last time when we cooked it for dinner and the next morning as the sun hit my body, my skin began strongly itching.”

Shahr Bano, a woman whose skin was seriously affected by the allergy, said, “After eating shora in the evening, I felt serious skin burning in the morning. I was unable see anything until landing in the hospital.”
