Kabul welcomes UAE’s troop deployment offer

Jun 06, 2018 - 15:42

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): The government has approved an offer from the United Arab Emirates (UAE) for deploying special forces to Afghanistaninfo-icon in the framework of the NATOinfo-icon-led mission, President Ghani’s office said on Wednesday.

The decision came at a National Security Council (NSC) meeting, chaired by Ghani late on Tuesday, a statement from the Presidential Palace said. The proposal for deployment of the UAE special forces was approved by the meeting.

However, the number and time of deployment of troops was not mentioned in the statement. The UAE government has said nothing in this regard either.

Five UAE diplomats, including its ambassador, were killed in an explosion in southern Kandahar province last year.

Political expert Javed Ghafoor called the development fruitful for the Afghan government. An Islamic country would be sending its troops to Afghanistan for the first time, he noted.

Ghafoor said important Talibaninfo-icon leaders had houses and businesses in the UAE. With the deployment of UAE troops to Afghanistan, both Pakistaninfo-icon and Taliban would feel the feel the impact.

The UAE was one of the three counties that recognized the Taliban regime and still the people of the oil-rich country have close ties to the insurgent group.

Currently, about 15,600 foreign troops are stationed in Afghanistan under NATO’s RS mission. The number is set to rise to 16,000.
