Voter registration ousts thousands of Logar children from schools

Voter registration ousts thousands of Logar children from schools

Jun 06, 2018 - 17:45

PUL-I-ALAM (Pajhwok): Educationinfo-icon officials on Wednesday said designating schools as voter registration centers had deprived thousands of students from attending their classes in central Logar province.

Logar education department spokesman, Mohammad Shahpor Arab, told Pajhwok Afghan News that voter registration centers operated in eight schools including Purk, Kalnigar, Choni, Hazrat Omar Farooq, Altimor, Faiz Kariz, Hesarak and Sari Sang in Pul-i-Alam, the provincial capital.

“Students of these schools face security threats after these centers opened in the schools,” he said.

He said around 3,000 students had permanently stopped going to their schools while a number of others attended their classes sometimes.

The Talibaninfo-icon militants have asked teachers and students not to take part in any elections related process, Arab added.

“Taliban in a letter have said that voter registration centers should be taken out of schools because they wanted to attack them,” he said.

These threats were reason that deprived thousands of students of attending their classes, he said.

Arab said Logar education officials had shared the issue with the relevant organs for a solution but no action could be take so far.

Ajmal, a student of 12 grade in Purk High School, told Pajhwok that they were worried about their security in schools since the voter registration centers were opened there.

“I personally rarely go to school, all students fear Taliban may attack the registration center,” he said.

He asked the government to resolve their problems so students could continue their education without any fear.

IECinfo-icon spokesman for Logar province, Wahidullah Samsur, said that they opened voter registration centers in schools based on an agreement signed with the provincial education department.

He said security organs were responsible to ensure security of voter registration centers.

Logar police spokesman, Shahpor Ahmadzai, said: “We have taken strict security measures in schools where voter registration centers are open.”

He said Afghan forces were using all their abilities to prevent militants from carrying attack on schools.

On the other hand, a Taliban spokesman, Zabihullahb Mujahid, said they strongly opposed the electoral process.

“We have asked Logar education department to take out voter registration centers from Logar schools because we want to attack them,” he said.

Militants have attacked two schools in Logar since the voter registration process started.
