KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Dr. Abdullah says his country needs long-term military and political support of the international community to combat insurgents.

Scheduled to meet Prime Minister Theresa May and Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson today (Thursday), he warned the ongoing insurgency posed a threat to the stability of the entire region.

Currently on a three-day visit to London, the CEO commended the UK’s contribution to Afghanistaninfo-icon since the ouster of the Talibaninfo-icon regime in 2001, according to a British newspaper.

The Independent quoted him as praising British support for Afghanistan’s defence sector, civic societyinfo-icon and public institutions. “It is a country which has stood by us and made great sacrifices.”

Since the pullout of the US-led foreign combat troops at the end of 2013, British SAS and SBS units have been in Afghanistan. The CEO acknowledged the UK’s significant role in Helmand province.

“All the Taliban and their backers in the region needed to do was make sure that they avoided engagement with NATOinfo-icon for those years and prepare to come back after that and restart their violent campaign,” he said.
