President’s ceasefire order to be honored: Security bosses

Jun 07, 2018 - 18:11

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): The ministries of defense and interior on Thursday said President Ashraf Ghani’s ceasefire order with the Talibaninfo-icon would be implemented and security forces would not take action until they were attacked.

Addressing reporters here, Army Chief Gen. Sharif Yaftali and Deputy Minister of Interior Lt. Gen. Akhtar Mohammad Ibrahimi said security forces would implement the presidential order regarding ceasefire in the mentioned time.

Gen. Yaftali said the Taliban led insurgency was illegitimate and promoted fratricide.

“Ceasefire doesn’t mean the security forces would remain silent to attacks from the Taliban. We are in defensive mode and in case of attack the security forces would respond,” he said.

Gen. Ibrahimi said the Taliban insurgency provided ground for other terrorist groups to grow and strengthen themselves.

“Being Afghans we need to convince the Taliban that the Afghan government is legitimate and authentic and those fighting against the government are illegitimate and rejected,” he added.

The UN, UK, Germany and the High Peace Councilinfo-icon (HPC) have welcomed the Afghan government ceasefire announcement, but the Taliban are silent.
