US military blows up 40 Taliban-seized Humvees

Jun 07, 2018 - 11:40

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): As many as 40 military vehicles the Talibaninfo-icon captured from the Afghan National Army have been destroyed in US airstrikes, a news report says.

The USA Today reported on Wednesday the US troops and their Afghans partners moved swiftly to wrest back stolen weapons and other equipment from the insurgents.

If the effort failed, the military eliminated the assets from the battlefield altogether so as not to prevent the militants taking advantage of them, Lt. Col. Martin O'Donnell, a US military spokesman, was quoted as saying.

The 40 Humvees were destroyed over the past three years the daily said, citing military statistics. The seized equipment is frequently used by the Taliban to camouflage themselves as American service members.

Over the past 13 years, the US is said to have bought 95,000 vehicles for the Afghan security forces. But those responsible for equipping the Afghan forces have been unable to account for all of them. One unarmored Humvees accounts for about $70,000.
