Jun 09, 2018 - 12:04

KUNDUZ CITY (Pajhwok): Twenty-four Afghan Local Police (ALP) personnel have been killed in a Talibaninfo-icon attack in the Qala-i-Zal district of northern Kunduz province, officials said on Saturday.

Aminullah Adeen, a member of provincial council, told Pajhwok Afghan News the militants stormed security check-posts in the Kolokh Tepa area of the district late on Friday night.

He said 24 ALP officials were killed and several weapons and ammunition taken away by insurgents.

Niamatullah Timori, the governor’s spokesman, confirmed the ALP casualties during the overnight attack. He said eight militants were also killed and nine others wounded in retaliatory fire.

Timori added the situation was currently under control after the arrival of reinforcements. An investigating team has been dispatched to the area.

Meanwhile, the Taliban confirmed the attack. The group spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid tweeted the rebels had overran six posts in the district as a result of the assault.

He claimed 25 security personnel were killed, a tank destroyed, seven motorbikes, a mortar, two machine guns, one rocket, 13 Kalashnikovs and some other weapons seized by the rebels.
