San Francisco students rally for Afghan teen’s release

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): School students in San Francisco have staged a rally for the release of an Afghan teenager, a US TV channel reports.

The 17-year-old Afghan named Hamid has been in federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) custody for six months, KPIX 5 said.

School students and immigrant rights activists visited the immigration and customs office to hand a $25,000 cheque for Hamid.

Mariel Villarreal, Hamid’s attorney, claimed his client was wrongly being held at an adult facility. The teen turned surrendered at the US-Mexico border six months ago.

According to the channel, Hamid’s brother and father were killed in Afghanistaninfo-icon. The boy himself also received death threats, the attorney claimed.

As and when freed, Hamid’s case will be tried by a federal immigration court in San Francisco. They boy may be released soon.
