China calls Afghan ceasefire as good news for region

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): Chinese President Xi Jinping has welcomed the temporary ceasefire between the Afghan government and the Talibaninfo-icon as a positive move for Afghanistaninfo-icon and the region, a statement from the Presidential Palace said on Sunday.

Xi expressed these views during a meeting with President Ashraf Ghani, the statement said. “We need to promote and strengthen bilateral relationship, it is our policy to expand cooperation with Afghanistan to help peace and stability in the region,” he said.

Ghani said Afghanistan was close to achieving peace, but cooperation of friendly countries would further take the Afghans closer to the goal.

Earlier, President Ghani announced a nine-day ceasefire with the Taliban who reciprocated the offer by announcing Eid holiday ceasefire.

Ghani also thanked the Chinese president for his efforts at seeking greater coordination between India and the US for promoting cooperation on Afghanistan.

Earlier, Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying had said they welcomed the temporary ceasefire declared by Afghan President Ashraf Ghani in the fight against the Taliban, saying military means cannot solve the Afghan problem.
“We hope all relevant parties can move in the same direction and initiate peace talks at an early date. China firmly supports the Afghan-led and Afghan-owned reconciliation process and continues to play a constructive role in this respect”
