Test against India seen as a high moment for Afghans

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): Next week’s one-off Test match between Afghanistaninfo-icon and India in Bengaluru will be a high moment for the war-torn country, The Asian Age says.

Although Afghanistan’s maiden Test is a story in itself, it does not quite capture the drama and pathos of how a war-torn nation made the cut, the newspaper said.

“Even two decades back, it was unthinkable that Afghanistan would be good enough to even play the sportinfo-icon, leave aside Tests,” it added. There was no adequate infrastructure to ensure the Afghans would reach this level of proficiency.

In an opinion piece, Ayaz Memon wrote Afghanistan’s rise is quite remarkable. Their progress has been nothing short of spectacular over the last five years.

“Their entry to Test cricket signals a high moment in the sport. But it also highlights the lethargic and insensitive policy of the ICC for several decades,” the article reads.

To the writer, Afghanistan deserves all the support and opportunities to play regularly in the Test format. Afghanistan would be going flat-out to stun India, Memon believing, wishing the visitors the best of luck.
