PESHAWAR (Pajhwok): The leader of Pakistaninfo-icon’s former ruling party has welcomed the ceasefire between the Talibaninfo-icon and the Afghan government during Eidul Fitr.

Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) President Shehbaz Sharif on Sunday hailed the initiatives by President Ashraf Ghani and the Afghan Taliban leader.

“It is a positive first step towards promoting an Afghan-led and Afghan-owned peace process. The PML-N government had played a key role in bringing peace to Afghanistaninfo-icon,” he claimed.

Shahbaz referred to hosting the first-ever face-to-face talks between the Afghan government and Taliban in the tourist resort of Murree in July 2015.

“Should the PML-N return to office after the July 25 general elections, it will be our priority to promote peace in Afghanistan, as peace there is intertwined with security in Pakistan,” he promised.

He urged the success of peace talks to cement peace. “I pray for enduring peace in Afghanistan with the hope that the ceasefire by both sides, the first since 2001, will achieve positive results.”
