Taliban overrun parts of Sar-i-Pul’s Sayyad district

SAR-I-PUL CITY (Pajhwok): Nearly 30 security personnel have been missing after Talibaninfo-icon militants attacked parts of the Sayyad district in northern Sar-i-Pul province, a well-placed source said on Tuesday.

Wishing anonymity, the source said the Taliban captured Qaflaton, Aqlani and Qashlaq villages of Sayyad district in overnight attacks.

The rebels captured three check-posts of Afghan National Army (ANA) and two check-posts of the Afghan Local Police (ALP) in the areas.

Twelve ANA soldiers and four policemen were killed and as many ANA soldiers captured by the Taliban in the night-long battle. Nearly 30 security personnel were missing after the clash, the source said.

Seventeen Taliban were also killed and 19 others injured in the gun battle.

Officials of the 209thShaheen Military Corps could not be reached for comment.

But Defence Ministry’s Spokesman Brig. Gen. Mohammad Radmnish said the battle was underway in Quflaton and other areas and security force had also inflicted heavy casualties on the Taliban.

He said six ANA soldiers had been killed in the firefight and 12 others injured.

Regarding casualties of ALP personnel a contact with the Interior Ministry could not established.

The Taliban claimed capturing a military base, eight check-posts and the Quflaton, Uzbekia, Qaflaton Alqani and Bulandghore areas.

The Taliban claimed inflicting heavy casualties on security forces and confirmed capturing four security personnel.
