KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): India stands shoulder to shoulder with Afghanistaninfo-icon in its remarkable cricketing journey, Prime Minister Narendra Modi says.

Afghanistan’s choice of playing their maiden Test match against India is a matter of great pride for his nation, the prime minister was quoted as saying on Wednesday.

Afghanistan, set to make their Test debut at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru today (Thursday), appear to be in good nick after whitewashing Bangladesh in a three-match T20 series.

In a letter to the Afghanistan squad, the premier said: "It is a matter of great pride and immense pleasure that Afghanistan has chosen to play its maiden test with India."

Modi commended Afghanistan’s cricketing journey, saying it had come in challenging and difficult circumstances.

"Today, cricket is a unifying force for the people of Afghanistan. India takes pride in being shoulder-to-shoulder with Afghanistan in this journey…" he wrote.
