Over 5.2m refugees returned home in 16 years: UN

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): Over 5.2 million Afghan refugees have returned to their homeland over the past 16 years, the United Nations said on Wednesday.

In a statement on Worldinfo-icon Refugee Day, UNHCR said the lack of access to services like educationinfo-icon and healthinfo-icon, housing and land remained critical challenges for returnees to rebuild their lives.

It urged the Afghan government and the international community to continue backing the livelihood of the returnees, offer them economic opportunities, basic services and include them in political and social structures.

A day earlier, Minister of Refugees and Repatriation Affairs Syed Hussain Alemi Balkhi said nearly 6 million Afghans were still living as refugees.

About 2.5 million Afghans are said to be residing in Pakistaninfo-icon, almost the same number in Iran and the rest in other countries of the world.
