Wolesi Jirga prepares ‘peace plan’ for govt

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): The Wolesi Jirgainfo-icon on Wednesday ruled the lower house intended to incorporate proposals of the peace marchers from southern Helmand province in its security plan.

The lower house of the parliament tasked its permanent  commission with finalizing the draft security plan and presenting it to the government for approval.

Lawmaker Nader Khan Katawazai from southeastern Paktia province, told today’s session that a number of lawmakers had prepared the ‘peace plan’ for the government to act on it.

He termed peace as every Afghan’s demand and said the role of the Wolesi Jirga should not be ignored in the peace process.

Lower house member from northern Kunduz province Shkeba Hashimi said the peace plan had been prepared by the house members and needed to be approved.

She said the house internal security commission intended to add suggestions of lawmakers and members of the Helmand peace march in the draft plan.

On Tuesday, welcoming peace activists from Helmand upon arriving in Kabul, President Ashraf Ghani invited the Talibaninfo-icon supreme leader, Mullahinfo-icon Haibatullah, for direct talks with him and offered a year-long ceasefire.

Speaker Abdul Rauf Ibarhimi directed the house permanent commission to prepare and add suggestions of lawmakers and the Helmand peace activists within 10 days on how to bring peace and present the draft before lawmakers.

He criticized the government for given the Wolesi Jirga a small role in the country’s affairs, especially in the peace process. He hoped the Wolesi Jirga peace plan would help.

The lamwker welcomed the Helmandis peace march and ordered the security commission to arrange a session with them.
