Targeted killings on the increase in Mazar-i-Sharif

MAZAR-I-SHARIF (Pajhwok): At least six people have been killed mysteriously over the past one week in the capital of northern Balkh province, residents complain.

Last week, six individuals were killed in Mazar-i-Sharif, the provincial capital. According to security officials some perpetrators have been arrested.

In a fresh incident, two members of family were killed mysteriously killed in Zarat Karta area of the city. Residents say both were cousins and one of them was the employee of WFP and another worked with a private bank.

On individual was killed in Mandawi area of the city in light day and the killers managed to flee the area, on the other hand, three people have lost their lives in Sajadia area after an armed clash on last Saturday.

Residents of Mazar-i-Sharif city expressed concern and blamed security forces failed to ensure the security of the city.

Jafar, who has shop in Madawa area, told Pajhwok Afghan News that an armed man shot dead a person in front of their eyes and escaped. He urged security forces to prevent targeted killings in the city.

Afzal Hadid, provincial council chief, confirmed people’s remarks and linked the criminal cases with the lack of police formation in the city.

“Most of policemen engaged in election affairs and due to lack of police formation they cannot prevent targeted killing in the city,” he explained.

He said central administration should pay serious head to military affairs of Balkh.

Police spokesman Shirajan Durrani confirmed that about six people were killed mysteriously over the past one week in the capital of Balkh.

He said a number of doers of the crime had been detained and efforts underway to bust others as soon as possible.

Meanwhile, Balkh residents, said security failed to ensure the security of citizens so should step down from their posts and let others do it beast.
