KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): An American company has been awarded a $39.6 million contract to operate MQ-9 Reaper drones in Afghanistaninfo-icon, says the US Navy.

In support of a US Marine Corps unit, General Atomics personnel would fly the drones which would be used for reconnaissance, surveillance and intelligence gathering purposes.

According to the navy, the pilotless aircraft will not be armed with weapons. The drones will be flown from ground control stations in Yuma, Arizona.

Other contractors on the ground in Afghanistan will handle landings and takeoffs in the so-called "remote-split" operations.

The US military contract with General Atomics highlights the resurgence of American operations in the country under President Donald Trump's new strategy.
