Ex-Purchaman district chief arrested over Taliban link

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): Afghan forces have arrested former administrative chief of the Purchaman district of western Farah province after being accused of handing over the district to Talibaninfo-icon militants, an official said Wednesday.

Local residents had accused former Purchaman district chief, Daud Mubariz, of his involvement in crime ranging from murder, torture to robbery, extortion in 2015.

The district residents had said the district was governed by Mubariz’s family and many people had been forced to displace and leave their homes as a result of their mistreatment by Mubariz, his family and relatives.

The Afghanistaninfo-icon Independent Human Rights Commission (AIHRC) had also expressed concern about human rights situation in the district.

Brig. Gen. Mohammad Radminsh, acting spokesman to the Ministry of Defense (MoD), on Wednesday told reporters in Kabul that Daud Mubariz, who was governing Purchaman district, surrendered the district to Taliban under a deal three weeks ago.

After that, Afghan security forces launched an operation, recapturing the district from the Taliban.

Radminsh said the former Purchaman district chief had been arrested along with two of his bodyguards.

Local residents on June 3 told Pajhwok Afghan News that the Taliban still ruled the Purchaman district --- a claim the Farah governor’s spokesman rejected.
