Suspects in Balkh mysterious deaths arrested

MAZAR-I-SHARIF (Pajhwok): Security officials in northern Balkh province claim to have arrested four suspects in connection with recent mysterious deaths in addition to nabbing armed robbers.

During the past 10 days, at least 10 people have been mysteriously killed in Mazar-i-Sharif, the capital of Balkh province, terrorizing residents.

Police Chief Akram Samai told reporters here four murderers had been arrested and three others killed during an ongoing operation against criminals.

Six professional thieves were detained and tens of weapons during the operation launched about a week ago, the police chief said.

“In the past one week police removed tinted glasses from tens of vehicles and captured 220 vehicles having with no registration number plates.

Earlier, some Provincial Council (PC) members have accused police of being lacking the authority to control crimes in the city.

But the police chief said there was no force in the city to enter a standoff with police.  “Local officials have allowed police to shoot at sight illegal armed men who do not respect police orders,” he said.

The police chief also handed over two cars to their owners which had been stolen some days back.

The residents of Mazar-i-Sharif said police efforts to control crimes were hope giving, but the focus should be on mysterious deaths.

The Balkh police chief said he considered people’s cooperation as vital in reducing crimes.
