More than 300 Parwan schoolchildren poisoned

CHARIKARinfo-icon (Pajhwok): More than 300 students were taken sick after dirking poisonous water in central Parwan province on Sunday morning, an official said.

Deputy Director of Educationinfo-icon Nizamuddin Rahimi told Pajhwok Afghan News the incident occurred at Zarbia School in Jabalus Saraj district in the morning.

He said more than 300 students, including girls, were evacuated to the Charikar Civil Hospital, poisoned after drinking toxic water.

Rahimi said unknown men had thrown some poisonous substance in the canal -- a from Panjsher river tributary. He added the schoolchildren had been consuming the canal water.

Parwan Civil Hospital Director Dr. Khalil Musadiq confirmed more than 100 students had been brought to the hospital for medical treatment after being poisoned. The student are said to be in stable condition.

A resident of the area, who was also affected by the contaminated water, alleged poison had been thrown into the canal. He urged the government to investigate the incident.

Habibia, a poisoned student, said they fell ill after drinking water from the canal. On Saturday, 22 students and six teachers of a private school fell ill in Kabulinfo-icon after inhaling a mysterious odor.
