President assures Nangarhar industrialists of full support

JALALABAD (Pajhwok): President Ashraf Ghani has ordered reforms in the customs department and encouraged security officials to stop smuggling, his office said on Monday.

Ghani issued the directives at a meeting with traders during his stay in Jalalabad on Sunday evening, a statement from the Presidential Palace said.

He said the security officials failing to arrest smugglers should be sent home. Nangarhar, he remarked, should feed half of Afghanistaninfo-icon but today the province could not feed its own people.

The president encouraged traders to invest in the country if they wanted to become industrialists. “You have the resources to rebuild Afghanistan, let’s join hands and rebuild Nangarhar.”

Representing businessmen, Dr. Mukhlis hailed the reforms introduced in provincial government departments.

Truckers were stopped and extorted at Torkham but in Khost province the story was different. “This will harm the open market concept.”

He added a quality scanner was deliberately kept inactive at Torkham and the private sector, if asked by the authorities, was ready to invest in scanners.
