Preliminary list of district council runners in 3 days

Jul 04, 2018 - 20:45

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): The preliminary list of candidates running in the Oct 20 district council elections would be announced in two or three days, an official said Wednesday.

Syed Hafeezullah Hashami, spokesman for the Independent Election Commission (IECinfo-icon), told reporters in Kabul that the process of vetting documents of district council candidates was underway and the preliminary list would be completed until Saturday or Sunday.

He said the number of people registering as voters had surpassed eight million, and the process of voter registration would continue until July 6 in villages.

He said the process of entering voter registration information into the system was underway and so far over 200,000 persons had been registered in the system, adding that 550 more employees would be hired to speed up the process.

“This process is currently underway with the help of 250 employees,” said Hashami, who argued registration of voters into the system would help ensure transparency and fairness in the upcoming elections.

Referring to the issue of candidate from the Sikh minority community, the IEC spokesman said they could introduce another candidate as a replacement to slain candidate Awtar Singh.

According to IEC, 3,731 persons have registered as candidates for district council elections scheduled for October 20.
