KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): The Independent Election Commission (IECinfo-icon) has not yet announced a date for registration of prisoners as voters despite the expiry of an earlier promised date July 6, an official said on Monday.

Lt. Gen. Abdul Aleem Kohistani, prison affairs in charge at the Ministry of Interior, said currently the registration of prisoners as voters has been launched in the Laghman jail, where around 150 inmates were held.

According to Kohistani, 35,000 prisoners, including 1,000 womeninfo-icon, had been imprisoned each above 10 years in jail nation-wide. He added among them, 21,000 prisoners were eligible to vote and if proper conditions were not provided, they would be deprived of the vote.

Yousuf Rashid, head of the Free and Fair Election Foundation of Afghanistaninfo-icon (FEFA) also expressed concern over the situation and said the IEC had failed to provide additional time to people to understand different election procedures, damaging their interest to participate in elections.

He said if the election body could not launch and complete its activities in the given time, it would badly affect the commission’s future activities.

Abdul Aziz Ibrahimi, deputy IEC spokesman, said so far the registration of prisoners as voter could not be launched in any prison, including the Laghman.

He, however, said a decision regarding the launch of prisoners’ registration as voters would be taken in two days.
