Conference of clerics on Afghanistan begins in Jeddah

RIYADH (Pajhwok): An international conference on peace efforts in Afghanistaninfo-icon kicked off in the Jeddah city of Saudi Arabia on Tuesday.

Religious scholars attending the two-day event are expected to ask the Talibaninfo-icon to join the peace process and recognise the democratically elected Afghan government.

Around 110 religious scholars from over 36 Muslim countries, including Afghanistan, Pakistaninfo-icon, Indonesia, Malaysia, Bangladesh, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Kuwait, Sudan and Tunisia, are participating in the conference.

A Pajhwok reporter in Jeddah said the event was opened by the Saudi minister of hajjinfo-icon and religious affairs.

OIC Secretary-General Dr. Yousef, Afghanistan Ulemainfo-icon Council chief Qayyamuddin Kashaaf and Imaminfo-icon of Meccainfo-icon Abdullah Saleh would deliver speeches.

The participants would later discuss the Afghanistan peace process. They are likely to drum up support for the reconciliation process.
