Travel to Afghanistan unsafe, US citizens warned

Travel to Afghanistan unsafe, US citizens warned

Jul 10, 2018 - 12:56

WASHINGTON (Pajhwok): The United States on Monday asked its citizens not to travel to Afghanistaninfo-icon due to crime, terrorism, unrest and armed conflict.

Travel to all areas of Afghanistan was unsafe because of high levels of kidnappings, hostage taking, suicide bombings, widespread military operations, landmines, and terrorist attacks, the State Department said.

In its latest travel advisory, the department said: “Terrorist groups continue plotting possible attacks in Afghanistan. Terrorists may attack with little or no warning, targeting tourist locations, transport hubs, gatherings and government buildings.”

The US Embassy's ability to provide routine and emergency services to American citizens in Afghanistan is severely limited, particularly outside of Kabulinfo-icon.

Evacuation options from Afghanistan were extremely limited due to the lack of infrastructure, geographic constraints and the volatile security situation, the travel advisory said.

The State Department added family members could not accompany US government employees working in Afghanistan.

Due to risks to civil aviation operating within or in the vicinity of Afghanistan, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has issued a notice to airmen, or a special federal aviation regulation (SFAR).
