Pakistan polls: Ghani vows enhanced border security

Jul 17, 2018 - 10:16

PESHAWAR (Pajhwok): President Ashraf Ghani has promised enhanced border security on the Afghan side during parliamentary elections in Pakistaninfo-icon.

Ghani held out the assurance on Monday when he telephoned Chief of Army Staff Gen. Qamar Javed Bajwa, Pakistan’s military spokesman tweeted.

Stepped-up security measures on the Afghan side would assist Pakistan's law enforcement and security forces during the time of elections, Maj. Gen. Asif Ghafoor wrote.

The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) chief said the Afghan president called the army chief to condole the loss of lives in recent terror incidents in Pakistan.

Last week, more than 170 people lost their lives in bomb attacks on election rallies in Mastung, Peshawar and Bannu cities.

Ghani also called caretaker Prime Minister Nasirul Mulk to offer condolences on the recent terrorist attacks on the election rallies in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan.

Nasirul Mulk said the pre-poll violence was aimed at derailing democracy, but government remained committed to ensuring the elections were conducted on schedule.
