JALALABAD (Pajhwok): Construction work on several key projects has been launched in eastern Nangarhar and southern Kandahar provinces at a total cost of 22.5 million afghanis, officials said Wednesday.

Ataullah Khogyani, the Nangarhar governor’s spokesman, told Pajhwok Afghan News the projects in the province would cost 12.5 million afghanis and would take four months to complete.

Launched by the municipality in Jalalabad, the provincial capital, the projects concluded asphalting of a 1,480-kilometer road, another 100km road and restoration of 640 canals.

The projects would create job opportunities for many people and would benefit 900 families directly and indirectly, Khogyani said.

Amranullah, a resident of Jalalabad, said previously people would face many hurdles as a result of the road’s bad condition especially after rainfall.

He added implementation of such projects would help resolve people’s problems.

In Kandahar, construction work on two irrigation projects began in the Panjwai district. The schemes would cost 10 million afghanis.

Governor Zalmai Wesa, while inaugurated the projects, said that a canal would be built to irrigate large swaths of uncultivated land at a cost of eight million afghanis.

According to Wesa, the schemes would be completed within seven months and would irrigate hundreds acres of land.
