MAZAR-I-SHARIF (Pajhwok): Dozens of Junbish-i-Islami Afghanistaninfo-icon party supporters on Wednesday blocked the road to Hairatan commercial port against heavy traffic in northern Balkh province.

Junbish party supporters have been protesting in neighbouring Faryab province over the past 16 days against the detention of Nizamuddin Qaisari, a local militia commander accused of illegal activities and armed attacks on security forces.

Sayed Shamsuddin Sadat, Junbish pary head in Balkh, told Pajhwok Afghan News that the port route would remain closed until their demands were accepted.

He said the return of vice president Gen. Abdul Rashid Dostum and the release of Nizamuddin Qaisari and his bodyguards were their demands.

“If our demands are still not accepted, we will cut off the electricity imported from Uzbekistan to Balkh province,” he warned, saying the government was not listening to them.

Meanwhile, pro-Junbish supporters in neighbouring Samangan province also blocked the Kabulinfo-icon-North highway.

They also demanded the release of Qaisari and return of Dostum.

The demonstrators also closed a number of government organs in Samangan, Jawzjan and Faryab provinces.
