KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): Thousands of troops from Russia and Tajikistan have launched joint military drills near the Afghanistaninfo-icon border, the defence ministry in Dushanbe says.

In an effort to prepare for beating back potential Talibaninfo-icon attacks, more than 10,000 troops, mostly Tajik reservists, are participating the first such drills in the area by the ex-Soviet allies.

A statement from the ministry said forces from the two countries would practice eliminating terrorists stealing into Tajikistan from Afghanistan in an imagined incursion.

For the drills, which will continue until Friday, some 400 soldiers and 80 pieces of Russian military equipment have been deployed from a military base in Tajikistan.
