KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): The Worldinfo-icon Food Programme (WFP) on Wednesday welcomed a new contribution of 5 million Australian dollars from the government of Australia to provide food assistance for drought-hit Afghans.

The latest contribution brings Australia’s total contribution to WFP’s operations in Afghanistaninfo-icon to AUD15 million in 2018, according to a statement from the humanitarian organisation.

WFP said it would use the contribution for a joint response to the drought-affected population in Afghanistan’s 20 provinces. This includes sourcing wheat grain from the Afghan government’s Strategic Grain Reserve (SGR).

The wheat flour would be distributed to affected families, complementing a food basket with items like fortified vegetable oil, pulses and iodised salt.

“Australia’s humanitarian assistance focuses on supporting the most vulnerable, with a particular focus on womeninfo-icon, children and people with a disability” said Ambassador Nicola Gordon-Smith.

“Australia is pleased to support this joint response by WFP and the government of Afghanistan to help provide vital food assistance to affected families.”

The contribution would enable WFP and partners, including the government of Afghanistan, to help drought-affected women, men and children make it through and build their resilience … by improving their food security and nutritional needs,” said Naoko Fukunaga, WFP’s deputy country director.
