JALALABAD (Pajhwok): Unidentified gunmen partially torched a girls high school in the Khogyani district of eastern Nangarhar province, an official said Thursday.

The governor’s spokesman, Attaullah Khogyani, told Pajhwok Afghan News that the Chamtali Girls High School was put on fire by unknown men on Wednesday night.

He said Afghan security forces reached the area on time and extinguished the fire before spreading.

Khogyani district chief Shamsulhaq said only two tents and a number of carpets at the school had been torched in the blaze and the school building was safe.

The school watchmen have been detained in connection with the incident and they are currently being questioned, he added.

Meanwhile, Nangarhar educationinfo-icon director, Mohammad Asif Shinwari, told Pajhwok that two tents, nine plastic carpets and a rug were destroyed in the school fire.

School torching incidents have recently increased in remote areas of Nangarhar province.
