KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): Construction work on the Tajikistan-Afghanistaninfo-icon railroad may begin by end of the current year, an international journal reports.

Design work for the project has already been completed, with the Afghan Railway Authority (ARA) head recently visiting Tajikistan for talks on the topic.

Led by Chief Executive Mohammad Yamma Shams, an ARA team discussed the project, and technical groups from both countries visited the proposed alignment.

According to the Railway Gazette International, the new line would start at Kolkhozabad and terminate at the Sher Khan Bandar in northern Afghanistan.

As part of the project, a memorandum has been inked on Tajikistan funding the construction of the Afghan station, the journal said.

The railway line may be extended 65km to Kunduz City before being stretched to Mazar-i-Sharif. The railroad may eventually form part of a rail corridor between Iran and China via Afghanistan.
