2 turbines being installed on Herat’s Salma dam

Jul 21, 2018 - 21:01

HERAT CITY (Pajhwok): Two 28-megawatt turbines are being activated at the Salma hydropower dam to somehow address the electricity shortage problem in western Herat province, officials said Saturday.

Jilani Farhad, the governor’s spokesman, told in a press conference here that the decision to install two turbines reached between the Ministry of Energy and Water, the Afghanistaninfo-icon Breshna Shirkat and provincial officials.

The Breshna Shirkat chief on Thursday said two turbines would be activated on Salma dam to address the electricity crisis.

The turbines are being installed at a time when the water storage in Salma dam reduced from last year’s 450 million cubic meters to 224 million cubic meters this year.

Hassan Fazali, director of the sub Harirod-Marghab rival zonal, told the press conference that the shortage of water in the dam contributed the drought effects this ongoing year.

He said currently 120 million cubic water of the 224 million cubic water was unusable. He urged farmers not to use too much water keeping in view the drought.
