FEROZKOH (Pajhwok): Insurgents have stormed security posts close to an ancient minaretinfo-icon in western Ghorinfo-icon province, local sources said on Saturday.

An official, who did not want to be named, confided to Pajhwok Afghan News several militants attacked check-posts around Jam Minaret late on Friday night.

The militants set alight the forest around the historic site where a mosqueinfo-icon was damaged but the minaret remained unharmed. The assailants retreated after a six hours firefight.

Mohammad Arif Aber, governor’s spokesman, without going into details, confirmed the assault.

Meanwhile, Director of Culture and Information Fakhruddin Ariapoor expressed concern at the instability in the area.

Some parts of the green area were damaged but the minaret remained intact, he said, warning if the central government did not pay due attention to the security of the site, the militants would destroy it.
