KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): A young Afghan woman is among nine candidates for the International Olympic Committee (IOC) membership.

IOC President Thomas Bach called the nomination of Samira Asghari sent a message to countries where womeninfo-icon were denied their rights.

The 24 years old has played basketball for Afghanistaninfo-icon besides taking on a string of administrative roles.

Bach told reporters in Lausanne: "She's a young woman of Afghanistan who is very active in promoting the right to play sportinfo-icon for women…"

Press Trust of India quoted the IOC chief as saying: "With this nomination we wanted to send a signal not only to men and women in Afghanistan but also in all these countries where women are facing serious obstacles to do sportsinfo-icon"
