SHIBERGHAN (Pajhwok): In a rare development, a ten-member group of Daesh or so-called Islamic State (IS) has shunned insurgency and joined the peace reconciliation process in northern Jawzjan province, an official said Sunday.

Deputy police chief Col. Mohammad Zalmai told Pajhwok Afghan News the former rebels had been operating against Afghan security forces in Aqsai village of Darzab district. He said the surrender would help improve security in the area.

He said the former rebels turned in four Kalashnikovs, five vehicles and motorbikes and other members of the group were also expected to join the peace process in near future.

Haji Jora, commander of the group, said he joined the group after his relatives advised him to do so and had since been providing logistics to the outfit. However he did not provide further details in this regard.

Meanwhile, Shir Ali, Afghan local police (ALP) commander in Qush Tepa district, said: “The former rebels operated under Haji Jora close to our area and the group had long been in contact to join the peace process.’

He said the surrender would help improve security in the district.
