Herat: 70 patients undergo kidney transplant in 4 months

HERAT CITY (Pajhwok): Healthinfo-icon officials in western Herat province say more than 200 successful kidney transplant surgeries took place in local hospitals during the past two years.

Dr. Farid Ahmad Ejaz, head of a private hospital in Herat City, the provincial capital, said successful kidney transplant operations had resulted in restoration of people’s trust in local hospitals.

He said some people living in foreign also visited Herat for kidney operations. He said 70 kidney transplant operations took place in the past four months alone.

Ejaz said 15 percent of patients referring to Herat hospitals were individuals livening in foreign countries.

“Afghan refugees in Iran, Pakistaninfo-icon and India also come to Herat for operations,” he said. Ejaz said kidney transplant in Afghanistaninfo-icon cost 200,000 to 500,000 afghanis.

Mohammad Akbar, a resident of Helmand province and a renal failure patient, said he came to Herat for his treatment after one of his close relatives agreed to donate his kidney to him against 350,000 afghanis

“One of my friends who underwent the same surgery here gave me the address so I came here,” he said.

Acting Public Health Director Dr. Asif Kabir said kidney transplant could take place in a private hospital having permission certificate of the Public Health Department.
