JALALABAD (Pajhwok): The security of Jalalabad, capital of eastern Nangarhar province, was handed over to Afghan National Army (ANA) soldiers from today (Wednesday), provincial officials said.

The decision came in the wake of a string of deadly attacks in order to ensure people’s protection. During the ongoing year so far, nearly 10 group attacks have taken place. The latest one assault happened yesterday on the refugee department.

The attack that involved three assailants began at about 12pm on Tuesday when one of the attackers detonated his explosives-laden vehicle at the entrance to the refugee and repatriation department.

Then the two other attackers entered the department, sparking a five-hour standoff with security forces. The carnage came to an end at 5pm when the last attacker was eliminated, said the governor’s spokesman, Attaullah Khogyani.

At least 15 people were killed and as many others wounded, including two womeninfo-icon. One IOM employee was among the fatalities while another was wounded grievously.

The governor and the 201st Selab Military Corps commander jointly decided to hand over the security of the city to ANA soldiers.

Meanwhile, a number of the city residents urged the government to launch a clearing operation across the province.

Political analyst Hamayoon Aman urged said security forces should launch a house-to-house search and patrol markets and street, because insurgents did not come from remote districts, but were present in the city.

Residents voiced their happiness over the handover of Jalalabad security to the ANA personnel and said it was the only state organ that was honestly working for stabilising the country.
