July a deadly month for Sikh minority in Afghanistan

July a deadly month for Sikh minority in Afghanistan

Aug 01, 2018 - 12:05

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): The Sikh minority suffered huge casualties in July for the first time in several years, the Civilian Protection Advocacy Group (CPAG) said on Wednesday.

In a statement, the group said most of July’s casualties in 22 provinces of the country were caused by suicide attacks and airstrikes. Most of the deaths and injuries happened in Nangarhar province as a result of suicide attacks.

Airstrikes also targeted civilians in Paktia, Nangarhar and Kunduz provinces in July, when the number fatalities significantly surged. But the level of injuries fell, compared to June.

CPAG statistics show 542 people suffered casualties last month -- 232 killed and 313 wounded. July 1, 10, 11, 29, 30 and 31 were deadly days in Jalalabad, the capital of Nangarhar, where over 70 people were killed and 50 others wounded.

Kabul also saw high casualties during the outgoing month when 21 people were killed and 80 others wounded in suicide attacks, CPAG added.

Airstrikes in Paktia, Kunduz and Nangarhar left more than 40 people dead. June saw 513 casualties -- 158 killed and the rest wounded.
