Protect civilians, UN again asks warring parties

Protect civilians, UN again asks warring parties

Aug 01, 2018 - 09:59

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): The UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistaninfo-icon (UNAMA) on Wednesday stresses all parties to the conflict must at all times uphold their obligations to protect civilians.

The UN mission renewed its call for an immediate end to targeting civilians and civilian objects, including schools and healthinfo-icon facilities, in compliance with international humanitarian law.

While denouncing Tuesday’s attack in Jalalabad that killed at least 13 civilians and injured 20 others, UNAMA expressed its outrage at the recent pattern of attacks targeting civilians.

Jalalabad has in recent months seen a significant number of attacks on schools and hospitals. Earlier this week, Jalalabad witnessed a similar suicide attack against a midwife educationinfo-icon centre.

“These attacks deliberately targeting civilians are abhorrent,” said Tadamichi Yamamoto, the secretary-general’s special representative. “The killings amount to atrocities and everything must be done to bring the planners to account.”

In a statement, the United Nations expressed its condolences to the loved ones of those killed and wished a full and speedy recovery to the injured.
