SHIBERGHAN (Pajhwok): A large group of Daesh insurgents on Thursday joined the reconciliation process in northern Jawzjan province, allowing thousands of displaced families to return home.

The 250-member group, which had been active in Darzab district, was officially welcomed at a ceremony in Shiberghan, the provincial capital, where Governor Mualvi Lotfullah Azizi was present.

The governor said renouncing violence by the 250 Daesh members would help bring stability to Darzab district, where around 10,000 families had been displaced including those from Qesh Tapa district due to Daesh activities.

Azizi said some of the displaced families could return to their previous homes of the group’s reconciliation.

More than 50 schools had to be closed due to Daesh activities Jawzjan, but they would be reopened, said the governor.

Mualvi Habib Rahman, who commanded the 250-member group, asked the government to remain committed to its pledges and provide security to them after they had reconciled.

“Many foreigners operate among Daesh ranks, most of them belong to Uzbekistan,” he said.

The group turned in 111 Kalashnikovs, 12 rockets and nine machineguns to security forces.
