MEHTHARLAM (Pajhwok): Several homes built on government land have been destroyed in Qarghai district of eastern Laghman province, local officials said on Thursday.

They said local councils would be established to prevent land usurping in the province.

Sarhadi Zwak, the governor’s spokesman, told Pajhwok Afghan News the councils work under a special mechanism to curb land grabbing.

According to Zwak, the councils would hold meetings with municipality and tribal elders on how to end the culture of land grabbing.

Mayor Eng. Nazibullah Alokozai said the councils would work with the authorities shoulder to shoulder and struggle against institutions that pave the way for grabbers through fake documents.

He said the councils to be created from tribal elders would also work to increase awareness about land grabbing.

Meanwhile, Zwak said homes of some land grabbers had been destroyed in Surkhakan area. He said the structures had been built on the land belonging to a clinic.

He said the houses were razed to the ground by the district anti-land grabbing commission led by district chief Mohabatullah Sherzai.

According to Zwak, Governor Mohammad Asif Nang had ordered departmental heads, including district chiefs, to prevent state grabbing and take serious action in light of the president’s directives.
