FAIZABAD (Pajhwok): An outbreak of measles disease has killed four children in Khwahan district of northeastern Badakhshan province, officials said Thursday.

While, residents of the Khwahan district said they were concerned about the spreading measles disease and urged the public healthinfo-icon department to pay attention to the matter.

Arab Shah, a district development council member, told Pajhwok Afghan News that people of the district were in serious trouble as two or three children in every house had contracted the measles diseases.

He said they had several times complained to the Public Health Department, but failed to elicit a positive response.

“Had a health team been dispatched to the district in the past, these children would have been saved,” he said, adding four children had so far died of the  highly contagious disease.

A public health official Dr. Mohammad Sabir Khashe confirmed receiving five children infected with measles in the civil hospital.

He said the children were discharged after treatment and said their blood had been sent to Kabulinfo-icon for further examination. He also said 15 other children suffering from measles were under treatment.

He assured a proper measles vaccination drive would be launched next month in cooperation with the Ministry of Public Health (MoPH) across the district.
