China ready to assist calamity-hit Afghans: Envoy

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): China has offered assistance for drought and floods affected people in Afghanistaninfo-icon, a statement from the Presidential Palace said on Thursday.

The offer was made by Chinese Ambassador to Afghanistan Liu Jinsong during a meeting with President Ashraf Ghani, the statement said, quoting the Chinese envoy as saying Beijing was ready to provide financial and food support to affected Afghans.

President Ghani hailed Chinese assistance with Afghanistan and termed the neighboring country’s role in stability of the region as vital.

Earlier, the Ministry of Agricultureinfo-icon and Livestock has warned that 15 of the country’s provinces were under severe drought threat, rendering above 20 million livestock to starve.

The affected provinces have been divided into three categories, with Jawzjan, Badghis, Faryab, Ghorinfo-icon, Uruzgan, Zabul, Kandahar, Helmand, Samangan, Balkh, Baghlan, Herat, Farah and Nimroz provinces falling in the fist category.

Maidan Wardak, Logar, Takhar, Paktia, Nuristan and Sar-i-Pul are placed in the second category while Ghazni, Daikundi, Bamyan, Kapesa, Parwan, Panshir, Kabul, Badakhshan, Laghman, Kunar, Nangarhar, Paktika and Khost provinces are placed in third category of drought hit areas.
