Commandos free 61 prisoners from Taliban jail in Helmand

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): Afghan commando forces freed 61 people from a Talibaninfo-icon’s prison during an operation in the Kajaki district of southern Helmand province last night, the Ministry of Defense (MoD) said on Friday.

The commandos raided the Taliban jail in Baba Karezinfo-icon area and freed the inmates who had been severely tortured, MoD spokesman Brig. Gen. Mohammad Radmensh told reporters here.

He said the commando forces also killed two Taliban militants and captured seven alive during the raid. The freed individuals and the detained Taliban had been shifted to the Afghan National Army base in the province.

The Taliban also confirmed their jail had been broken. Their spokesman Qari Yousaf Ahmadi said the jail in Karez area was used to keep ordinary criminals. It was broken and 60 people were taken away, he said.

He said two civilian homes and three private vehicles were torched during the security forces operation and four members of a family were arrested.
