Riyadh denounces Paktia mosque bombing

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): Saudi Arabia on Saturday strongly condemned the deadly suicide bomb attack on a Shiite mosqueinfo-icon in southeastern Paktia province.

At least 34 people were killed and another 94 injured on Friday when a suicide bomber attacked the mosque in the Gardez, the provincial capital.

In a statement, the Saudi ministry of foreign affairs expressed solidarity with Afghanistaninfo-icon, notably in its efforts to thwart extremism and combat terrorism.

The statement underscored the kingdom outright rejection of all forms of violence. It offered condolences to families of the victims and the government and whished the injured speedy recovery.

President Ashraf Ghani also denounced suicide bombing as an act against Islam. “Such acts cannot create sectarian divisions, because Afghanistan is exemplary in Islamic unity and this will remain unchanged forever.”

The United Nation Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) also condemned the attack. Womeninfo-icon and children were among the scores of civilian casualties, the mission said.

“This attack targeting civilians has no possible justification,” said Tadamichi Yamamoto, the UN secretary-general’s special representative. “Those who are responsible for enabling this attack must be brought to justice.”

In a separate statement, former president Hamid Karzai also condemned the suicide attack on the Sahib-ul-Zaman Mosque. The Talibaninfo-icon have denied involvement in the assault.
