51 dead, 74 wounded as Logar’s Azra battle ends

PULI-I-ALAM (Pajhwok): The firefight in Azra district of central Logar province came to an end late Tuesday with the killing of 31 Talibaninfo-icon, 16 security forces and four civilians, a public representative said Wednesday.

Abdul Wali Wakeel, a member of the Provincial Council, told Pajhwok Afghan News that hundreds of armed militants made a run for the Azra district center from different directions Monday midnight.

The ensuing clashes continued overnight and lasted until late Tuesday, leaving four civilians, 16 security officials and 31 Taliban militants dead and eight civilians, 26 security forces and 40 insurgents wounded, the public representative said.

On Tuesday, the Ministry of Interior said a US forces’ airstrike which had been called in mistakenly hit an Afghan police outpost, killing 14 personnel.

NATOinfo-icon’s media office in Kabulinfo-icon confirmed the airstrike that had been requested by Afghan forces during an intense fighting with the Taliban.

The alliance provided no information regarding causalities, but said that the reports it had caused casualties were being investigated.

The Azra district administrative chief, Hamidullah Hamid, the gun-battle came to an end Tuesday evening and the situation was under control now.

Sahib Khan, a resident of the area, told Pajhwok that four civilians had been killed and four children and two womeninfo-icon were among nine other civilians wounded in the assaults.

Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid had claimed the fighters were advancing on Azra district headquarters and they had so far killed 19 local police and wounded six others.

On Monday, residents and officials of Azra district told Pajhwok that the Taliban had laid siege to the district and asked the government to act immediately.
