KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): Armey Chief Gen. Mohammad Sharif Yaftali said on Sunday the Talibaninfo-icon set on fire important public and private properties in Ghazni City to bring down the morale of common people, but security forces strongly defended the city.

Addressing reporters in Kabul, Gen. Yaftali said the army’s priority was to purge Ghazni City of Taliban but the process had been slow going because the Taliban had taken refuge at residential homes.

He said Taliban fighters from Helmand, Uruzgan and other provinces jointly stormed the city on Friday because the Taliban of Ghazni alone did lacked the ability to attack the city.

“Our forces would first clear Ghazni City, then reopen the main highway and establish security check points at main entry points to secure the city.”

The army chief said security forces were utilizing their capabilities and would clear Ghazni city in two days after which the situation would return to normalcy.

He said 10 security personnel had been killed during the Ghazni fighting and 20 others injured. Around 150 Taliban had suffered casualties.

Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said the Taliban had captured most districts of Ghazni province and fighting was currently underway in Ghazni City.

He claimed a number of security personnel had been killed and military hardware, weapons and ammunition captured.
