Purge Imam Sahib of gunmen, residents ask govt

Aug 13, 2018 - 11:17

KUNDUZ CITY (Pajhwok): Residents of the Imaminfo-icon Sahib district of northern Kunduz province say they are tired of illegal gunmen’s cruelty, urging the government to resolve the issue.

Hundreds of residents aired the complaint at a gathering organised by the appellant court on Sunday. Feroz, one of the participants, grumbled he was beaten up by gunmen after he refused to pay them money.

He said: “Being a driver, I’m the only breadwinner for my family. Arbab Hamid’s gunmen threatened me with death if I didn’t pay them 50,000 afghanis; they beat me ruthlessly and I seek justice.”

Malim Khair Mohammad had a similar story to share. He asked the government to take effective steps to rid the district dwellers of irresponsible individuals.

Nek Mohammad, a resident of Halqa Qawal area, accused Hamidullah of killing his two sons and injuring two others. “We have left our homes because of gunmen.

“If the government does not heed our voice, where should we go? We are tired of this cruelty,” he said, reminding the authorities of their responsibility to protect ordinary citizens.

Pajhwok tried to contact Hamidullah for comments, but failed. At the end of the meeting, Deputy Governor Hashmatullah Arzbeg promised all illegal gunmen would be arrested and handed over to security organs.

“We will take serious action against the armed men in Imam Sahib, as we did in other districts of the province,” he added.

Mohammad Arif Mubashir, appellant court judge, said they had appointed a delegation to look into residents’ complaints. The gunmen would be detained and brought to justice, he vowed.
